Review (Scott McCutcheon 12/02/25)

The Marvel cinematic universe has taken a bit of a spanking over the last few years. With poor films came poor box office and it seemed as if the once certain money-makers that were the Marvel films had lost their appeal. Thankfully Captain America: Brave New World appears to have gotten them back on track. A terrific story and a terrific cast all add up to one of the best Marvel films of recent years.

After an aging Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed the shield to him in Avengers: Endgame (2019) Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is now the new Captain America. After he gets an invite to the White House by the incumbent President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford, he along with his sidekick and protégé Joaquin Torres, or Falcon (Danny Ramirez) find themselves mixed up in an international incident, caused by the evil Dr Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), between Japan and the US.

As is the way with Marvel films an encyclopaedic knowledge of what’s came before in the numerous films and TV series does help to fill in the blanks. Brave New World is a follow on from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV series (2021) and a good knowledge of this, whilst not essential, does help.

Mackie makes a great Captain America but it’s a terrific Ford who pretty much steals the picture as U.S. President Thaddeus Ross.

Captain America: Brave New World might not be up there with the best Marvel films but it’s fast paced, a lot of fun and much better than we have come to expect from the studio in recent years.

4/5
