The worst reviews to write are reviews where to tell anything of the plot would waste the film for the reader. Companion is one of those films so I would suggest avoid any trailers, clips and reviews that give away spoilers.
Trying to keep spoilers to a minimum here but be warned.
Iris and Josh (Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid), a young couple very much in love, head for a weekend retreat to the remote home of a billionaire Sergey (Rupert Friend). Joining the couple are Sergey’s girlfriend Kat and Eli and his boyfriend Patrick.
Believing Sergey has made his billions through drug dealing and after he attempts to rape Iris, leading to him being fatally stabbed in the neck, the group decide to steal Sergey’s money.
The one problem being that Iris is more than she appears to be, and as the trio try and pin the murder on her, it ends up as a game of cat and mouse which ultimately leads to some more brutal killings.
Written and directed by Drew Hancock, this is first feature Hancock having previously been a writer on some mostly unmemorable TV shows, Companion whilst always entertaining it never feels original. Megan (2022) and Ex Machina (2014) had similar themes.
For all its good ideas Companion ends up being no more than a competent slasher film that won’t linger too long in the memory.
