There’s an argument that if Disney buy a company with the intention of exploiting a franchise then eventually, in an attempt to get their investment back, the quality drops. It’s happened with Marvel, Lucasfilms and to a lesser extent Pixar. With the purchase of 20 th Century Fox in 2019 Disney became the owner of numerous X-Men characters among them Deadpool & Wolverine and now in 2024 Disney brings the characters into The Marvel Cinematic Universe with mixed results.
The story is pretty simple in that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) has to save the universe its destruction brought about by the death of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). As any Marvel fans will know being dead isn’t a problem in Marvel’s world. If you need to resurrect a character you always have the multiverse to turn to.
Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018) had the same recurring characters but were pretty much standalone films that could be enjoyed by a casual viewer. It all starts of pretty well with most of the first two films characters returning. However within the first few minutes these same characters, with the exception of Deadpool himself, are pretty much shunted to the side-lines so that numerous other characters from the MCU can be randomly introduced at various points in the proceedings.
Deadpool v Wolverine is good fun but unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Marvel comics then you’re in for a confusing couple of hours. Characters are peppered throughout the story at such a pace that it’s hard to keep up with who’s who.
Jackman and Reynolds are both their usual terrific selves although you might end up with the same opinion of Deadpool as Wolverine has as Reynolds patter, including numerous jokes at the expense of Disney, does get a bit tiresome.
As has been the way with recent Marvel films Deadpool & Wolverine feels bloated and way over complicated than it needs to be. Deadpool & Wolverine feels like a film made by fans for fans which unfortunately means if, like me, you’re a casual viewer then you’re probably going to be left scratching your head by the films end.
