Fly Me to The Moon, Apple TV’s most recent venture into cinemas, is no one’s idea of a definitive version of the moon landing. Instead what we have is a glossy rom-com that’s more fun than it should really be.
Played for laughs against the back drop of the USA’s attempt to put a man on the moon in 1969 Scarlett Johansson plays Kelly Jones, a tough as nails PR manager who is recruited by a shady Whitehouse operative (Woody Harrelson) to put a positive spin on Americans floundering space programme.
In a world filled with men, she’s stuck in a cupboard out the way at first, she locks heads with launch hardnosed launch director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum). Davis has no time for her ideas which include things like sticking the astronauts’ faces on cereal boxes and having them wear expensive omega watches.
Fly Me to The Moon offers up no real surprises, the will they won’t they get together idea, will, at its conclusion, come as no surprise to anyone.
Tatum and Johansson are both terrific as are the supporting cast that includes the likes of Ray Romano from TV’s Everybody Loves Raymond and Jim Rash who almost steals the show as a tizer drink loving camp director who is tasked with faking the moon landing in a hanger.
Fly Me to The Moon is a piece of hugely enjoyable nonsense that comes highly recommended.
