Glasgow Film Festival review (11/03/25 Scott McCutcheon)

From Hilde, With Love is a German biographical film based on the true story of Hilde Coppi (Liv Lisa Fries) and her husband Hans Coppi (Johannes Hegemann). The Coppi’s belonged to a group called Die Rote Kapelle (“The Red Orchestra”), a German resistance group that was set up to oppose the Nazis during the Second World War.

Set in Berlin in 1942 From Hilde, With Love begins with the interrogation of a heavily pregnant Hilde after the gestapo had found an illegal radio in her home. ). The radio as we later find out has been used, by her husband Hans with her knowledge, for sending coded radio messages to and from Moscow.

From there the story is told in both the present day, where Hilde and the other members of the group are incarcerated in a German prison awaiting trial, and in flashback.

Focusing mainly on the female members of the group director Andreas Dresen’s film struggles to build any tension, the numerous flashback scenes, whilst filling out the plot lines at beginning, by the end serve no purpose other than to tell us how much Hilde and her husband love each other.

From Hilde, With Love had the potential to tell an important and interesting story. Sadly it never fulfils that potential let down by an over repetitive and drawn out story.
