Review (Scott McCutcheon 23rd May 2024)

It is hard to believe that it’s 9 years since Mad Max: Fury Road hit cinema screens and introduced us to the character of Imperator Furiosa (played brilliantly by Charlize Theron). The plot of Fury Road hinted at a number of back stories for the character and now, at age 79, director George Miller returns to fill in the plot holes.

The plot of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is pretty simple and with car chases and stunts very much copied from Fury Road, there’s a certain familiarity to it all.

Miller’s story begins with young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) being snatched from the Green Place of her birth by a horde of bikers who are lead by the Warlord Dementus, (Chris Hemsworth). Later the search for water, food and fuel takes Dementus to The Citadel where, after threatening to destroy fuel town, he strikes a deal with Immortan Joe. The deal includes water, food and the young Furiosa.

Furiosa manages to escape from the clutches of Immortan Joe’s son and spends her teenage years disguised as a man. Growing into adulthood (this is where Anya Taylor-Joy joins the story) and becoming an accomplished mechanic. Furiosa helps build an indestructible truck called The War Rig. The truck, which is used to transport fuel from Fuel Town to Citadel, is driven by Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke) who seeing the potential in Furiosa takes her under his wing.

After that the plot of Furiosa: A Mad Max pretty much sticks to the tried and tested formula of the first film, car chases galore with a revenge story added for some extra spice.

As a prequel there’s some enjoyment to be had watching Mad Max: Fury Road before watching Furiosa, nods to Fury Road are peppered throughout Furiosa. The only issues with having a knowledge of Furiosa in Fury Road is you’re left with very little to surprise you.

Is it as good as Fury Road? Probably not. But as a standalone film it’s up there with Dune Part 2 as one of the best films of the year.

With relentless action, terrific performances and with running time that actually feels too short at just under two and a half hours, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga comes highly recommended.
