Review

Published in 1988 Matilda was one of British writer Roald Dahl’s last novels. It has since went on to spawn a feature film in 1996 that starred Mara Wilson as the title character. Then in 1990 The Royal Shakespeare Company created the hugely successful version of the show that continues to play in London’s West End at the time of writing.

Now, 22 years after the show opened, we have the film version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical.

Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir) is the neglected and mistreated child of Harry and Zinnia Wormwood (Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough). After she is enrolled, rather reluctantly by her parents, in Crunchem Hall elementary school where the principle is the formidable Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), Matilda proves herself to be to be streets ahead, academically, from the other children of her age. This causes her to be taken under the wing of teacher, Miss Jennifer Honey (Alisha Weir) who together battle the oppressive Trunchbull.

With toe tapping lyrics by Tim Minchin and with wonderful and a sparkling performances from Emma Thompson, Alisha Weir and a cast of incredibly talented kids, Matilda The Musical will have fans of musicals singing its praises to the heavens. Matilda the Musical is almost certainly the feel good film of Christmas 2022. Highly recommended.
