Review (08/09/23 Scott Mc Cutcheon)

It’s hard to believe that it’s over 20 years since we were invited to the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). It’s also hard to believe that, given its massive box-office success, there was a period of 14 years before we were invited to the second My Big fat Greek Wedding (2016).

Sadly My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is the first not to star Michael Constantine (who died in 2021) and Bruce Gray (who died in 2017). Time has been kinder to the rest of the cast and they all return for this third outing.

Written and directed by Nia Vardalos (who also plays Toula Portokalos) this outing sees the Portokalos clan leaving Chicago and heading back to Greece where they want to honour their father’s (Michael Constantine) dying wish and give his diaries to his childhood friends.

Losing a few of the older characters to the ravages of time has left a hole that the younger cast struggled to fill. Whilst enjoyable, and bearing more of a resemblance to Mamma Mia (without the songs) than the first two outings in the series, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, never quite manages to resurrect the magic of the first two.
