Anyone going to see Osgood Perkins The Monkey expecting something similar to his last film, Longlegs, is going to be in for something of a surprise. Whereas Longlegs was an out an out thriller The Monkey is a horror comedy that has more in common with the Final Destination films and even Home Alone than the aforementioned Longlegs.
Theo James and Rohan Campbell are identical twins Hal and Bill, James plays them as adults whilst Campbell plays them as kids. After the death of their father the twins inherit a clockwork monkey that, if it beats its drum, unexplained bizarre deaths occur.
Perkins has a lot of fun with the premise with some jokes working and some not. Cheerleaders’ turning up at the house of a recently deceased is somewhat bizarre whilst the Home Alone jokes really don’t make too much sense.
Overall The Monkey is a bit of a hodgepodge of a film that steals ideas from other better films. It is a lot of fun but might not be what you’re expecting.
