Review (Scott McCutcheon 20/03/25)

Directors Jacob Perlmutter and Manon Ouimet’s Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other is a well-crafted documentary that is meant to give us a fly on the wall look into the lives of Joel Meyerowitz (84), a world-renowned photographer and his wife Maggie Barrett (75), a talented but less recognised artist and writer.

Spreading their time between their home in Tuscany and their apartment in New York. We follow the pair and listen into their conversations, which mostly cover their deaths which both appear to think is imminent, and learn of Maggie’s resentment of Joel’s success. Perlmutter and Ouimet’s film is certainly kinder to Meyerowitz than it is to Barrett painting her as a jealous and demanding partner whilst he is the soul of reason and the bread winner in the relationship.

Barrett’s gloom isn’t helped either by a fall she has that leaves her immobile and in a wheelchair. Whilst she deals with physiotherapy her constant pain and her insecurity she dislikes that Meyerowitz is concentrating on his latest exhibition at the Tate Gallery. Everything eventually comes to a head as Barrett berates Meyerowitz for ignoring her when he’s on the phone and we witness a 15 minute outburst as she blames Meyerowitz for not appreciating her and for her having to live in a New York apartment that was bought by Meyerowitz and his previous wife.

If there’s one criticism of Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each it's that on occasions, such as the pair’s big argument, the events feel more staged than naturally occurring. The lack of anyone else in the proceeding, other than a few neighbours in Tuscany, don't help the staging and also comes across as a bit strange. Family members’ are mentioned but never seen.

It all must sound pretty mundane, perhaps it’s their openness or their vulnerability or it’s just that their relationship is like a car crash and you can’t take your eyes of it, but there’s something special in Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other that manages to draw you into the pairs relationship.
