Director Samuel Van Grinsven’s second feature, his last was Sequin in a Blue Room Back in 2019, is a strange mix of family drama and psychological horror.
After the death of his mother Jack (Dacre Montgomery) turns up at the funeral under the impression that he has been invited by his mother’s widow Jill (Vicky Krieps). After they are introduced for the first time Jack finds out that he was never invited by Jill.
Asked to stay until the cremation Jack and Jill (you would have thought a better name could have been found for the pair) find that they are not alone with both, at various intervals being possessed by the dead woman.
Krieps is as always good but you have to ask yourself if she has ever been in a film where her character hasn’t been miserable for the entire length of the film.
Grinsven’s film is a hard watch not just in terms of its subject matter but also its pacing. Slow to the point of being tedious Went Up the Hill will be a big disappointment to those going expecting a standard horror film
